The Manchester Storm Discography

Anyone who's ever been to an ice hockey match at the Nynex Arena will know that one of the many reasons why it is so exciting, is the musical interludes that occur when there is a brief break in the play - for a fight or something! Into The Storm brings you the Manchester Storm Discography, a list of the songs played during the game. This is by no means a definitive list - if I've forgotten one, please let me know the song title and the occasion for which it appears to be used. I have sound clips for some of the songs - click the link to hear or download them.

Private Investigation - DIRE STRAITS
Download Clip
This used to be played as the players came out onto the rink at the start of the game.

Fight For Your Right (To Party) - BEASTIE BOYS
Clip not yet available
This is played when a fight breaks out and works quite well to get the crowd interested in what is happening, although they sometimes delay the song for some reason until it's too late and then it doesn't work at all.

Boom Boom Boom - OUTHERE BROTHERS
Clip not yet available
This is Dale "Shotgun" Jago's tune. The whole crowd sings along to Boom Boom Boom Let Me Hear You Say Jago JAGO!

Whoomph! (There It Is) - CLOCK
Clip not yet available
This used to be Alan "Hollywood" Hough's tune. The crowd all used to sing along to Hough! There he is! Now it is used mainly to laugh at Slough with the lyrics Sluff There It Is!

Viva Las Vegas - ZZ TOP
Download Clip
This used to be John "Vegas" Finnie's tune. The crowd all used to sing along to it and we sometimes even got a video clip of Elvis singing it!

Fiesta - POGUES
Download Clip
This is everyone's favourite tune! The whole crowd dances along when Storm score a goal.

Another One Bites The Dust - QUEEN
Download Clip
This one is played when we are soundly beating another team - so not played very much last season.

Weather With You - CROWDED HOUSE
Download Clip
Always the final song of the night, this is played as everyone is reflecting on the evening's game and making their way out of the arena.

We Are The Champions - QUEEN
Download Clip
This hasn't been played since we won the British League Division One in 1996 (surprisingly enough!)

God Save The Queen (The National Anthem)
Clip not yet available
This waste of time shouldn't be played but always is. The advantage of arriving late for a game is that you avoid it.

We Will Rock You - QUEEN
Download Clip
Played over and over especially at the most inappropriate times. We will rock you - yes, but we won't actually score or anything!

Oops Upside Your Head - THE GAP BAND
Clip not yet available
Played fairly irregularly for no partiular reason. No-one is much interested as it is an old song that everyone has forgotten about. It was re-released a few years ago, and it surely would have been a better idea to use that version.

19 - PAUL HARDCASTLE
Download Clip
Only rarely played - the 19 lyrics seeming to have no relevance to any situation in the game. Could have been used as Nick Poole's song but wasn't.

Roll With It - OASIS
Download Clip
Quite a crowd favourite due to the immense popularity of Oasis in their Manchester hometown. Was famously played by mistake instead of the national anthem at the start of a game.

Two Tribes - FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD
Clip not yet available
From the eighties, this has little relevance - seems to be used to try and push the "battle" element of the game, but everyone just yawns when this comes on.

Wild Child - IGGY POP
Clip not yet available
Has become Stefan "Wild Child" Ketola's song and is used when Stefan has made a major impact on the game and is usually followed by chants of Ooh Aah Ketolaaa and strange wooooing noises.

Unbelievable - EMF
Download Clip
Classic from the early 1990s that gets a fair amount of plays. Seems to work well in the game breaks, but could be used more to highlight "unbelievable" plays.

Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag - PIGBAG
Clip not yet available
Very strange instrumental type tune that seems to be on the main round of tunes played. It is quite catchy but serves no particular purpose.

Everybody Needs Somebody To Love - BLUES BROTHERS
Download Clip
Good singalong-type song that old people know as well as the youngsters. Isn't played that often and is only used for the singalong value.

The Power - SNAP
Download Clip
Made famous for being a number 1 song in the early 1990s with the stupidest lyrics in the music business. Well maybe that is an a bit over the top, but rhythm is a dancer?

Reet Petite - JACKIE WILSON
Clip not yet available
Only seems to be played to please the grandmas in the crowd as it was out over 30 years ago.

Wiggle Wiggle - OUTHERE BROTHERS
Download Clip
A bit dated now, but in their heyday a few years ago, the Outhere Brothers released a batch of popular dance tracks such as Wiggle Wiggle. Has no relevance to anything but pleases the youngsters who can still remember it.

I Feel Good - JAMES BROWN
Clip not yet available
Why this is popular I'll never know, but some people seem to like it. As the title suggests, it seems to be used to highlight the feelgood factor in the games, such as when we're winning.

Boom! Shake The Room - DJ JAZZY JEFF & FRESH PRINCE
Download Clip
This has got to be the most inappropriate song played. In a city that is still recovering from an IRA bomb blast, this record is played and played again. With lyrics like "Boom Shake Shake Skake The Room - Tick Tick Tick Tick Boom!", someone should have kept this one quiet.

One Step Beyond - MADNESS
Clip not yet available
Madness seem to be another band that everyone likes and that seems to be the only reason that this is played. It gets the rounds, played over and over so we all become sick of it after a bit.

Do Wah Diddy - MANFRED MANN
Clip not yet available
One from the ark that makes no sense whatsoever.

Hippy Hippy Shakes - SWINGING BLUE JEANS
Clip not yet available
Another useless clip that isn't too bad really. Gets a reasonable amount of plays, but doesn't add much to the situations in which it is used.

Guaglione - PEREZ PRADO
Download Clip
This is most famous for being the Guiness advert song a couple of years ago and everybody in the crowd joins in with the swaying arm movements on each of the ten occasions that it is played!

The Twist - CHUBBY CHECKER
Clip not yet available
Another old one that just about interests the youngsters. For ages I thought they were playing the version with The Fat Boys in it but it turned out to be the original.

YMCA - VILLAGE PEOPLE
Download Clip
This has got to be the worst song on the planet and it is played over and over and over - even more times than We Will Rock You. Everyone in the crowd (except me) does all the Y M C A arm movements and gets really excited about it. Get rid of it!!!

Pump Up The Volume - MARRS
Download Clip
Another from the eighties, but at least this doesn't get so many plays. This song was really the first record that dared to be a modern dance record.

Rock N Roll (Part Two) - GARY GLITTER
Clip not yet available
One of the few old songs that is actually quite entertaining. A similar song was released in the late 1980s that was called Doctor Who and it always reminds me of that. Rock and Roll (Part Two) is the song that Blackburn Hawks use to celebrate their goals and so usually cue "hilarious" comments by people around me, and yes I do it sometimes, "Oh, have Blackburn scored" etc etc. The Blackburn fans that sit in the away end for every Storm game sometimes get up and celebrate a goal when this comes on. Hmmmm.

Dancing In The Street - DAVID BOWIE & MICK JAGGER
Clip not yet available
Complete waste of space this one. Don't know what the point of it is as no one sings or dances to it.

Cigarettes And Alcohol - OASIS
Clip not yet available
Another Oasis track that gets a bit of a play. Not a particularly good song though so only interests that diehard Oasis fans in the crowd (like 90% of them).

Ooh Aah Just A Little Bit - GINA G
Download Clip
Famous for being Britain's Eurovision Song Contest entry in 1996 that did much better in the charts than in the contest. All the youngsters like this and so it gets a lot of well-deserved plays.

Macarena - LOS DEL RIO
Download Clip
Oh dear. What can be said about this that hasn't already. I suspect this song will NEVER go away. Despite the fact that I have even been seen "doing the Macarena" at the Nynex myself, that doesn't detract from the fact that this is the ONLY reason that some of the kids go to the game. 3-2 down 30 seconds to go, Storm on yet another attack.....cue Macarena and Manchester Wave.

The Hockey Song - STOMPIN' TOM
Download Clip
Sometimes played in between the periods as a singalong, the words come on the screen for everyone to join in. It originated in North America and has obvious connections with the NHL. Appears to be an ice hockey anthem around the world.

Whoosh! (It's Behind You) - SHEFFIELD STEELERS
Download Clip
Alarmingly sung by Sheffield Steelers themselves in 1996 and released on CD for the world to buy. Luckily most of the world didn't and it was mainly people in Sheffield. This didn't stop the Steelers using it to celebrate their goals at the Sheffield Arena. Storm used the song once famously to celebrate their opening goal in the game with Steelers at the Nynex - unfortunately rather than inspiring the team to a great win, it inspired Steelers to stuff Storm in the Yorkshire side's first game at the Nynex.

Wannabe - SPICE GIRLS
Clip not yet available
Very popular with the younger fans, this is usually sung with the lyrics I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want, I want a GOAL, I want a GOAL (etc).

Step On - HAPPY MONDAYS
Clip not yet available
A Manchester classic from the early 1990s and is a new addition this season. Doesn't serve much purpose but is not a bad tune.

Saturday Night - WHIGFIELD
Download Clip
Very strange choice this particularly as we usually play on a Sunday night, not Saturdays. Either it won't get much play or we'll be embarrased by having it inappropriately.

Shout - LULU
Clip not yet available
It has to be said that this song rivals YMCA for worst song ever. Thankfully it isn't played quite as much as YMCA.

Sit Down - JAMES
Clip not yet available
Another early 1990s classic this seems quite popular with the fans (well most are sitting down!)

That's The Way I Like It - K C & THE SUNSHINE BAND
Clip not yet available
Seems to be used when something good happens but doesn't get that much play.

Satisfaction - ROLLING STONES
Clip not yet available
Don't know who picked this old one! It doesn't get played that much thankfully.

Walk The Dinosaur - WAS NOT WAS
Clip not yet available
From the early 1990s but certainly not a classic. This is one of the most useless records there is, but still manages to get played a few times.

Play That Funky Music - WILD CHERRY
Clip not yet available
Come on, is this a joke? Another appaling record that shouldn't have the cobwebs dusted off it, never mind played.

Things Can Only Get Better - D:REAM
Clip not yet available
Things can only get better - I suppose the record just about passes as OK but the lyrics are hardly encouraging!

We're Gonna Win - BRYAN ADAMS
Clip not yet available
Played when....we're gonna win! The crowd all like this and willingly sing and dance to it.

All Right Now - FREE
Clip not yet available
This one is the Wrigleys Spearmint Gum advert and I think is played when....we're all right now.

Hi Ho Silver Lining - JEFF BECK
Clip not yet available
New addition to the playlist this season - bit of an old one that doesn't really mean very much, but most people seem to like it.

Under Pressure - QUEEN
Download Clip
Another Queen one (yawn) and I think this one is played when we're under pressure surprisingly enough, but I haven't heard it that often.

The Boys Are Back In Town - THIN LIZZY
Clip not yet available
This one is played when we're playing well and hopefully beating the opposition.

Raise Your Hands - BON JOVI
Clip not yet available
Used in Season 2 sometimes when the players entered onto the ice.

Animal - DEF LEPPARD
Clip not yet available
Played just once or twice in the build up to the start of the match.

Bad Medicine - BON JOVI
Clip not yet available
Also occasionally played in the pre-match build up.

Everything About You - UGLY KID JOE
Clip not yet available
Another one that is occasionally played in the pre-match build up.

Inside - STILTSKIN
Clip not yet available
Yet another tune that gets played as part of the pre-match build up sometimes.

The Only Thing That Looks Good on Me Is You - BYRAN ADAMS
Clip not yet available
This is another record that is played sometimes before the match gets underway.

Jump - VAN HALEN
Clip not yet available
Another pre-match record and people jump to...or maybe not.

Movin' On Up - M PEOPLE
Download Clip
Was used after we beat Amiens in the International Tournament to signify that we are better than last season and moving on up!

Jump Around - HOUSE OF PAIN
Clip not yet available
Very popular with people who like to jump around, but not so popular with those who get jumped around on!

Two Princes - SPIN DOCTORS
Clip not yet available
Not played that often and not a particularly notable song anyway.

Here Comes The Hotstepper - INI KAMOZE
Clip not yet available
Starting to be played a bit more now for some reason and isn't too bad I suppose. I think it's got some dance to it, but I can't quite remember it.

Spirit In the Sky - DOCTOR & THE MEDICS
Clip not yet available
Only rarely played, thankfully, as I really don't like this song at all. It has just the lyrics that I can't stand in songs and yet I still find myself mouthing the words when it is played - I have to wash my mouth out with soap and water straight away.

Come Out And Play - THE OFFSPRING
Clip not yet available
Played when there are fights because of the bit that goes You gotta keep 'em seperated.

Trouble - SHAMPOO
Clip not yet available
Played when we're not doing very well - usually followed by groans from the crowd!

The William Tell Overture
Download Clip
This one came out of the blue and looks like it will become a regular occurance. Everyone in the arena gets up and pretends to ride a horse for a bit. There are two blokes who run around Block 109 to it as well.

Tubthumping - CHUMBAWAMBA
Clip not yet available
Definitely a crowd favourite and most people get up and join in the dance.

Song Two - BLUR
Clip not yet available
Not played very often (I don't think). It goes "Woo Hoo" in the bit that gets played.

No Way No Way - VANILLA
Clip not yet available
This has now been re-released - great!

Slang - DEF LEPPARD
Clip not yet available
Occasionally played in the build up to the start of the game.

Place Your Hands - REEF
Clip not yet available
Only occasionally played and people put their hands up to it!

Lump - THE PRESIDENTS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Clip not yet available
Don't know this one at all. I'm told it has been played during the game!

The Addams Family Theme
Download Clip
This was suddenly played one match along with the William Tell Overture and has become a permanent fixture since then.

There are more that I haven't remembered yet - if you can help then let me know! Also if you have or know where I can get the clips that I haven't got yet, then let me know!
