I presume the message posted by Mike J explains
the reason for the standing ovation. I remember on the
following ice line the players expressed their thanks
for it, and incidently took a lot of critism at the same time.
It wasn't just blind support by fans, but more of an acknowledgement
of the problems the team were experiencing and that the fans were not
going to desert them.
I personally feel this is a better way of supporting the team during bad performances
than booing them off the ice, which happens in the NHL, and has happened in Britain.
