I go with Damian Webber's theory...
Kurt pretends to favour one of the goalies (in this case, Sjerven) so that the other (in this case, Hrivnak) is determined to play harder and better and put more effort in, so that Kurt may decide to play him, that way, rather than making a half-assed effort because they know that they are going to be playing every other game, they play their best. Then, when Kurt plays the other goalie for a few consecutive games, the benched goalie will try to play harder...
I hope that makes sanse. If it doesn't, you should be able to work it out anyway...
