There's a book just come out here in Canada called "Hockey for Dummies"...same series as Windows for Dummies etc....which tells you everything you could possibly want to know about hockey to begin with..I don't know if it is available in the UK but it might be worth asking about it at Smiths...give them something worthwhile to do after the Christmas rush...
