It's not quite that simple...a player gets a plus if he's on the ice for a goal at even-strength or short-handed and a minus if he's on for a goal against at even-strength or while one man up. So you don't get any pluses or minuses for power-play goals which is why it's a fairly rough and ready statistic..if a player is used more on special teams than on a regular shift he won't amass too many +- points.
