Well...! I've only been on it a few days so I haven't learnt it all, but...

It is a way of letting me and others know which of our friends is online at the same time as you. So, I know that of the people that I have got set up, Keith, Demi and Kingpin are ON-line and Col, Gareth, Killauea, Moom, paulb, Shaunie and Shooter are all not on the Internet at the moment. If any of them log on, I will know.

The point of knowing this is not just so you can then e-mail them or whatever, but ICQ has built-in mail, chat and instant messaging so that if a friend comes online, I can send them a message, their machine would beep and display the message and they would reply or ignore the message (ie. you can send an ignore message back). You can set your options to Busy, Away from desk etc so your friends know if you are available to talk to or not.

Full info and download instructions (it's free) are at www.icq.com
